You’ve made it through the hardest part! The college applications are submitted, those personal essays are polished, and you can practically taste the freedom of graduation. You deserve a huge round of applause! The future is so bright, and the excitement is real. But let’s be honest—with all that excitement comes the heavy topic of college tuition. You’ve worked incredibly hard to get here, and we want to make sure your dedication translates into cash for college!
As your Austin Texas Senior Portrait Photographer, I spend so much time with amazing students and parents navigating the whole senior year journey. From capturing those perfect senior photos to cheering you on through applications, I see firsthand the effort you put in. I’m here to tell you that your accomplishments are worth rewarding, and scholarships are the perfect way to make that happen!

Scholarship 101: Tips for the High-Achiever
You’re a student who is active, does well in school, and puts in the work. You are exactly who scholarship committees want to award! It’s time to cash in on all that amazing effort. Here are my top tips to get you started:

1. Think Beyond the “Big Three”
Everyone knows about the major scholarship sites, but the real gold mine is often found closer to home! Look for scholarships tied to:
Your High School: Check with your school counselor for local awards specifically for Sterling Classical School, Westlake, Round Rock, or other Central Texas area seniors.
Parents’ Employers/Unions: Many companies offer money to employees’ children.
Community Groups: Think Rotary Clubs, Junior League, local churches, and professional organizations in Austin and surrounding areas.

2. Turn Your Extracurriculars into Dollars
Your activities aren’t just for fun—they prove you are a well-rounded leader! If you’re involved in theater, cheer, painting, or volunteering (like Kadence!), look for scholarships tied to those specific interests. These are often easier to win because fewer students apply.

3. Build a “Scholarship Essay Bank”
Many applications ask similar questions about leadership, overcoming challenges, or future goals. Don’t start from scratch every time! Take the amazing essays you wrote for college applications and chop them up. Create a file of great paragraphs and stories you can quickly mix and match to fit new prompts. This saves so much time!

4. Create a Winning Documentation File
Organization is your best friend right now! Keep a master folder (digital and paper!) that has:
Your most recent transcript.
A concise, one-page Activity Sheet or Resume.
A copy of your SAT/ACT scores.
A list of your Volunteer Hours.
Having these items ready to go makes applying for multiple scholarships fast and painless.

5. Ask for Letters of Recommendation NOW
Professors, teachers, and mentors get busy! Ask your favorite teachers for a recommendation letter before you even need it for a specific scholarship. They can write a general letter that you (or they) can easily update later. Be sure to give them a copy of your resume and a nice thank-you note!
