Natural & Totally You Poses (Keep Moving!)
Bonus tip right out the gate. The key to looking natural and breaking away from feeling stiff? Always keep moving! In every single pose option you see here, find a subtle way to keep flowing and expressing yourself.
The Lean: Lean against a cool wall, a textured tree, or a fun building. This simple pose looks effortlessly chic! Gives half of your body a job so you only have to think of the other half. Now, shift your weight, turn your head, or peek over your shoulder!
The Casual Stroll: Walk towards the camera, looking over your shoulder or straight ahead. Pretend like your frolicking in a field Sound of Music style (does that age me…probably) Don’t forget to swing your arms a little, maybe toss your hair, or even skip a step! The more you commit to this the better it looks!
The Hand-on-Hip: This classic pose can be powerful or playful, depending on your expression. It’s a great pose to start out with because it gives both of your hands something to do. Try shifting your hips, tilting your head, or playing with your other hand!
The Over-the-Shoulder Glance: Turn your body away from the camera and look over your shoulder. Now queue the audible gasp of amazingness from me (this one is my favorite). Now, try a little smile, a soft gaze, or a playful wink!
A Sitting Pose: Find a comfy spot to sit, like a cool bench, a set of steps, a rock, or right on the ground in a beautiful field. The options on how to elevate this are endless. Try crossing your legs, pretending your a mermaid, leaning back, or looking up at the sky!
Express Yourself: Show Your Personality!
Your expressions are key to authentic senior portraits my friends. You can add each of these expressions to any of the poses above to give you multiple options & variety.
The Laugh: A genuine laugh can totally capture your amazing personality and make your photos super dynamic. Think of something hilarious and let it out! Sometimes when you feel silly in a pose, it produces a laugh. Don’t hold it back its genuine and amazing!
The Relaxed Gaze: A relaxed expression (formerly known as a serious look) can convey calm and confidence. Try looking directly into the camera as if your photographer or friend was talking to you through it and listen. You can have them tell you a story to help break away from overthinking it. This will prevent you from looking mad but make you look effortless.
The Thoughtful Pose: Rest your chin on your hand or look off into the distance, as if you’re dreaming big dreams! It feels cheesy but don’t let that fool you it’s a classic for a reason. Shift your eyes slowly, or gently touch your hair.
Props: Your Fun Sidekicks!
Props are fantastic for adding personality and giving you something to do with your hands during your high school senior photos!
Hats and Accessories: Add a cool hat, a cozy scarf, your favorite necklace, or your favorite sunglasses to complete your look. Play with them – tip your hat, peek over the sunglasses! This can add some really cool vibes to your photos.
Musical Instruments: If you play an instrument, absolutely incorporate it into your photos! You didn’t practice hours and hours for nothing! Play a few notes, hold it naturally, or get creative with it. These images are storytelling and iconic!
Sports Equipment: You’ve been training so long, let’s show off your athletic side. Bring your sports gear! Hold a ball, swing a bat, or pose confidently with your uniform. This also gives you variety in your photo gallery!
Books or Flowers: These props can add a touch of elegance and sophistication. Read a page, tuck a flower behind your ear, or hold a bouquet close. Flowers are my personal favorite prop, it adds a beautiful feminine natural touch to any photo shoot.
