Senior year! It’s supposed to be this amazing, unforgettable time, right? And it totally is! But let’s be honest, it can also feel like a giant, overwhelming roller coaster. Between tough classes, college applications, scholarship deadlines, figuring out your future, and all the “lasts” with your friends, it’s completely normal to feel a huge wave of stress, worry, and even some anxiety. You’re not alone if you’re feeling the pressure of this huge year.

As your Austin senior photographer, I see so many amazing high school seniors juggling a million things. 1. Get Moving! (Even a Little Bit Helps!)

Feeling stressed? Your body wants to move! When you exercise, your brain releases “feel-good” chemicals called endorphins. Think of them as your body’s natural stress-busters! You don’t need to train for a marathon – a brisk walk, dancing in your room, shooting hoops, or even just stretching can make a big difference. Just 20-30 minutes a few times a week can really help clear your head and boost your mood.

2. Master the Art of the “Brain Dump” (and Planning!)

Is your mind racing with a million to-dos? “I have that essay, I need to apply for that scholarship, don’t forget the college fair!” Grab a piece of paper or open a note on your phone and just write everything down. Get it all out of your head! This my friends is called a “brain dump.” Once it’s all out there, you can start to organize it, prioritize, and make a plan. Breaking big tasks into smaller, manageable steps can make them feel way less scary and help you feel more in control.

3. Power Up with Sleep and Good Food!

This one might sound like old people talk, but it’s HUGE. When you’re stressed, it’s easy to skimp on sleep or grab snacks with no nutrition for your body & brain. But truly, your brain and body need fuel and rest to handle everything! Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Yes, mom sleeping in until noon is for my brain health 😉. Try to add some fruits, veggies, and protein to what you are already eating. Think of it like charging your phone – you can’t run on empty! A well-rested, well-fed brain is much better at tackling challenges.

4. Connect with Your People (No Homework Talk Required!)

When stress builds up, sometimes we pull away. But connecting with friends and family is a powerful stress reliever! Spend time with people who make you laugh and feel good. Go for a coffee, watch a movie, go for a scenic drive, or just hang out without talking about grades or college. Laughter and social support release oxytocin, another feel-good chemical that helps you relax and feel less alone. Your support system is gold during senior year in Austin!

5. Practice Mindfulness: Take a Breath!

You didn’t think this was NOT going to be on this list!?? This isn’t just for yogis! Mindfulness is about being present in the moment. When you feel overwhelmed, try this simple trick: Close your eyes (if you can!), take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, hold it for a few seconds, and then slowly let it out through your mouth. Do this 3-5 times. It helps calm your nervous system and gives your brain a mini-break from all the worry. There are great videos on Youtube & Spotify for guided meditations. Want more, check out apps (like Calm or Headspace) if you want to try guided meditations.
